Q#1. Did Jack and Claire really have an affair?
A. Well, no character on the show has ever actually come out and said
anything like, "Yes, Jack and Claire were romantically
involved." However, Rene Balcer, one of the executive
producers of Law & Order, in an interview for the magazine Generation
Series, confirmed that, yes, there was an affair going on between Jack and
Claire. He says (to paraphrase) that the affair was added as a subplot to
keep the actors, as well as the viewers, interested, as well as to add a
personal dynamic to the show that originally wasn't there. (Rumor has it
though that Sam Waterston wasn't told of the affair until midway through season
6, and that he was stunned when he got the news. It's been said then, that
"those of us who thought there was an affair were watching the show,
and those of us who thought there was no affair were watching
Jack!" A great website that is solely
devoted to the question of The Affair can be found here.
Check there for all of the evidence (and then some!)
Q#2. What is the deal with the episode with the really odd
filming, unknown District Attorney, and a seemingly younger Ben Stone and Max
Greevey?
A.
This episode, "Everybody's Favorite Bagman", was the original pilot
shot for CBS back in 1988. The show wasn't picked up for production for
another 2 years, at which time NBC aired "Prescription for Death" as
the series opener. "Bagman" was the 6th episode aired, which led
to the confusion about the "new" D.A., Alfred Wentworth.
(As a side note on "Bagman", I love how everybody
seems terrified of the big, vicious man-eating monster Ben Stone... heeheehee
snicker snicker!)
Q#3. Whatever happened to D.A. Adam Schiff?
A. In the season 11 opener, "Endurance", Nora
Lewin is introduced as an "interim appointment" to the office of the
District Attorney, and it is mentioned in bits and pieces of dialogue there and
in the next few episodes that Schiff is in Vienna working on the Holocaust
reparations. In real life, Steven Hill decided to leave L&O after 10
years due to his age and declining health. The possibility is still open,
however, for him to make guest appearances from time to time.
Q#4. Whatever happened to D.A.
Nora Lewin?
A. Nobody really
knows. It's being assumed by most of us that
she was ousted in the last election and replaced
by the current D.A., Arthur Branch.
Q#5. Do you have any
plans to add info about SVU/CI/Crime &
Punishment/Homicide: Life on the Street to your
site?
A. Very simply, no.
I've never really watched those shows regularly
(some of them, not at all, in fact), so I wouldn't
really know what I was talking about. If
you're looking for a site that does cover all of
the L&O "franchises", check out Law & Order: The Guide
at http://wolfstories2.tripod.com.
